Imagine sitting at a beautiful table in a dimly lit restaurant on a date with your loved one. You are celebrating ten years of marriage and reminiscing about the adventures you have shared and dreaming about the wonderful years to come. You discuss where you want to take your children on vacation this coming summer. Your date ordered spicy barbeque spareribs and a diet coke. When the anticipated meal arrives you notice a piece of sharp glass in the sauce of the ribs and a leaking 9 volt battery in the diet coke. Would you say something to your loved one? If you know that your loved one was about to consume something that could poison them you would jump across the table to intercept that fork from hitting their unknowing mouth.

Foods today are laced with toxins that can affect our short and long term health. Research is mounting and conclusive on the effects these chemicals have on us. They may make foods sweet and unbelievably tasty, but the cost of flavor is disease and harm. Let's look at one of these ingredients and reveal what the research tells us on the effects it has on us.

What is MSG?

How do you think you can take a triangular piece of cardboard, color it bright orange, call it a Dorito and make it have an addictive flavor that makes you finish the entire bag? It is seasoned with MSG. MSG is an additive in food to make it tasty and delicious. It is found in most canned meats and soups, chips, crackers and snacks. It is in most fast foods to make them taste great using low quality, cheap ingredients. The chemical is found to be addictive and cause intense cravings. A direct effect on weight gain and obesity is related to MSG consumption. Studies reveal it is also toxic to cells and causes direct damage to the brain and internal organs. Here is a shocking list of what research has found MSG to be linked to:

Cardiovascular disease-increased plaques

Metabolic Syndrome-Obesity, High Blood Pressure, Diabetes

Gut disease-Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Cancer-Lung, colon, breast, skin, ovary, thyroid

Infertility-male and female

Asthma

ADD, ADHD and Autism-in children

Dementia/ Alzheimer's
It is important to protect our children and the children of our friends and family. A recent article showed that young brains (infant to 20's ) are even more vulnerable to the toxic effects. Their brains are four times more sensitive to even very low levels of MSG. This increases their risk of ADHD, ADD, Autism and childhood obesity. Did you know that Cheddar Fish crackers have MSG? How many little kids that you know love to snack on these flavorful flounders?

The problem with MSG is that it is not always labeled as MSG or monosodium glutamate. More often it is hidden in other names. Here are a few names to be aware of when reading labels:

MSG Gelatin

Glutamate Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (HVP)

Textured Protein Hydrolyzed Plant Protein (HPP)

Yeast Extract Autolyzed Plant Protein

Glutamic Acid Sodium Caseinate

Autolyzed Yeast Calcium Caseinate
